SIAC 2010 International Arbitration Conference in Shanghai

On November 11, 2010, SIAC International Arbitration Conference, which focused on "International Arbitration: China in the Global Perspective", was held successfully in Swissotel Grand Shanghai. This Conference was jointly presented by SIAC (Singapore International Arbitration Center) and Shanghai Bar Association, was supported by Singapore Academy of Law and CPIT Shanghai (Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Shanghai ). Seven leading international law firms such as Clifford Chance, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, sponsored this Conference, GLO was the sole domestic sponsor.

More than 120 arbitrators, lawyers, in-house counsels, at home or abroad, attended this Conference. Mr. Minn Naing Oo, CEO of SIAC, Mr. Liu Zhengdong, President of Shanghai Bar Association and Mr.Li Zhigang, Vice-president of CPIT Shanghai made the opening remarks. This Conference was composed of four sessions, including "First Session: Arbitration in China and Singapore and Why Companies Should Arbitrate", "Second Session: Drafting of an Effective Dispute Resolution Clause", "Third Session: The New SIAC 2010 Rules and the Role of the Courts in Facilitating International Arbitration in Singapore", "Fourth Session: A panel Discussion on Recognition & Enforcement of Arbitral Awards". Relevant professionals delivered speech and answered the questions from the audience in each session.

During the "Second Session: Drafting of an Effective Dispute Resolution Clause", Mr. Niu Lei, partner of GLO, Shanghai, delivered a speech entitled "Seat of Arbitration vs. Venue of Arbitration" in English. Seat of Arbitration and Venue of Arbitration are two important points in drafting an arbitration clause, especially the Seat of Arbitration, which affects the validity of arbitration clause, lex arbitri, courts' jurisdiction and recognition & enforcement of arbitral awards. Mr. Niu Lei has an extensive experience in both domestic and international arbitration as counsel and arbitrator, he analyzed and discussed this topic deeply from aspects of theory and practice in his speech.
